About

Join us for a night with Groote Post Producer Peter Pentz, exploring the magnificent range from the South African winery.

Groote Post is one of South Africa’s distinctive family-owned wine estates, situated in the historic Darling Hills on the Cape’s West Coast. Dating back to the 18th century, the estate has a rich agricultural heritage, with its historic homestead built in 1808. Acquired by the Pentz family in 1972, Groote Post has evolved from a traditional farming operation into a celebrated wine producer, with three generations of the family now involved in the business. Their philosophy centres on producing wines that capture the individuality of their coastal vineyards, combining freshness, elegance and a true sense of place.

The estate’s vineyards are planted predominantly on the cool, south-facing slopes of Kapokberg, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The combination of altitude, well-drained clay soils and cooling south-easterly winds creates ideal conditions for slow ripening, helping the grapes retain their natural acidity and aromatic complexity. These maritime influences are particularly evident in the estate’s Sauvignon Blanc, which has become one of its signature varieties. Groote Post also produces a diverse portfolio of wines, from crisp, expressive whites to elegant reds, showcasing the versatility of the Darling region.

Among the highlights of the range is Seasalter Sauvignon Blanc, a vibrant expression of the West Coast, combining tropical fruit, fresh apple and citrus with distinctive mineral and saline notes. The estate’s Pinch of Salt Chardonnay offers a different perspective, balancing stone fruit and citrus with steely minerality and refreshing acidity. For red wine lovers, the The Old Man’s Blend range delivers approachable, fruit-driven wines, while Salt of the Earth, a blend of Shiraz and Cinsault, brings together dark fruit, peppery spice and supple tannins. The portfolio also includes varietal expressions such as Merlot, Shiraz and Pinot Noir, alongside traditional-method sparkling wines made using the Méthode Cap Classique technique.

Groote Post’s winemaking philosophy begins in the vineyard, where the focus is on identifying and selecting the finest fruit to express the character of the estate. The cooling maritime climate plays a crucial role in preserving freshness, particularly in the white wines, while careful vineyard management and selective fruit selection help ensure quality across the range. The estate’s history is also reflected in its iconic Old Man’s Blend, whose distinctive label combines a cattle ear notcher with a vine pruner, symbolising the Pentz family’s journey from dairy farming to winemaking. Winemaker Lukas Wentzel, who has worked with the family for more than two decades, continues this tradition of combining experience, innovation and an emphasis on drinkability.

Whether you are already a passionate admirer of South African wines or looking to discover the character of the Cape West Coast for the first time, this promises to be a memorable evening exploring Groote Post’s coastal terroir, distinctive wines, and fascinating family history, accompanied by delicious food and outstanding company.
