South Africans have more visa options for the UK than most nationalities. The key is finding which route fits your situation. Here is the full picture for 2026.
Option 1: Ancestry Visa — the golden ticket
If you have a UK-born grandparent, this is almost certainly your best route. No employer sponsor needed, no minimum salary, work in any job.
- Eligibility — Commonwealth citizen, aged 17+, at least one grandparent born in the UK (including Channel Islands and Isle of Man), intend to work in the UK.
- Duration — 5 years. Leads to ILR after 5 years, then British citizenship.
- Cost — £726 application fee + IHS £1,035/year. Total for 5 years: approximately £5,900.
- Processing — 3 weeks standard, 5 working days priority (+£500).
- No sponsor, no salary threshold, any job — the most flexible route for eligible saffas.
Option 2: Skilled Worker Visa
The standard route if you have a job offer from a UK licensed sponsor employer.
- Eligibility — Job offer from a UK licensed sponsor, job at RQF Level 3+, salary meeting the going rate (general minimum £38,700).
- Duration — Up to 5 years, extendable, leads to ILR after 5 years.
- Cost — £819 (up to 3 years) or £1,638 (over 3 years) + IHS £1,035/year.
- English language — B2 level required from January 2026. An IELTS for UKVI test is typically required as SA is not on the exempt list.
Option 3: Youth Mobility Scheme
- South Africa was added to the Youth Mobility Scheme. Available to South Africans aged 18-30.
- Live and work in the UK for up to 2 years. No sponsor needed.
- Does not lead directly to ILR but gives you 2 years to find a Skilled Worker sponsor.
- Annual quota applies. Apply as early as possible when the ballot opens.
Option 4: Right of Abode
If your parent (not just grandparent) was born in the UK, you may have the Right of Abode — the right to live and work in the UK indefinitely with no visa. Apply for a Certificate of Entitlement. Consult an immigration solicitor to confirm eligibility.
Other routes
- Spouse/partner visa — If your partner is a UK citizen or settled person. Fee: £1,938 + IHS.
- Student visa — For UK university study. Fee: £490. Some work rights included.
Dual citizenship warning: If you naturalise as a British citizen, you will automatically lose your South African citizenship UNLESS you apply for exemption from the SA Department of Home Affairs BEFORE naturalising. This is a critical and often missed step. Seek legal advice on the SA Citizenship Act before beginning any naturalisation process.
