The Ancestry Visa is the most flexible UK visa available to South Africans. No employer sponsor, no salary threshold, work in any job or run your own business. If you have a UK-born grandparent, this should be your first port of call.
Do you qualify?
- You are a South African (Commonwealth) citizen aged 17 or over
- At least one grandparent was born in the UK: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. Ireland before 31 March 1922 also counts.
- You are able to work and intend to work in the UK
- You can support yourself financially without claiming public funds
Proving the family chain
You need an unbroken documentary chain linking you to your UK-born grandparent. Every name change through marriage must be evidenced.
- Your own unabridged birth certificate — from SA DHA. Allow 4-6 weeks. Often longer at peak times.
- Your parent's unabridged birth certificate — linking you to the grandparent.
- Your grandparent's UK birth certificate — order from the UK General Register Office at gro.gov.uk for £11. Allow 2-4 weeks.
- Marriage certificates wherever surnames changed in the chain.
Costs
- Application fee — £726
- Immigration Health Surcharge — £1,035/year x 5 years = £5,175
- Total (5-year visa) — approximately £5,900
- Priority service — additional £500 for 5-working-day decision (widely used by SA applicants)
- TB test — approximately R1,800-R2,200
What you get
- 5-year visa to live and work in the UK in any role, with any employer, or self-employed
- Bring your spouse/partner and children as dependants
- After 5 years: apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- After ILR + 1 year: apply for British citizenship
- No access to public funds while on the visa
Common reasons for refusal
- Incomplete documentary chain: gaps between you and your grandparent
- TB test certificate expired or from a non-approved clinic
- Insufficient financial evidence
- No credible evidence of intention to work
Unlike the Skilled Worker Visa, you can arrive without a job offer and start looking once you are here. Most South Africans in Wimbledon, Putney and Richmond got here on Ancestry Visas.
