Most South African professionals in finance, IT, engineering and healthcare use the Skilled Worker Visa. Here is how it works in 2026 following the Immigration White Paper changes.
What you need to qualify
- Job offer from a UK employer with a valid Home Office sponsorship licence. Check at gov.uk/check-employer-sponsor-licence.
- Job at or above RQF Level 3 (A-level equivalent or above)
- Salary meeting the going rate — general minimum £38,700 or the specific occupation going rate, whichever is higher. Healthcare and shortage occupations may have lower thresholds.
- English language at B2 level — required from January 2026. IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test typically required. SA is not on the exempt list.
- TB test certificate — SA is on the listed countries
Costs
- Application fee (up to 3 years) — £819
- Application fee (over 3 years) — £1,638
- Health and Care Worker fee — £284 (NHS and care sector)
- Immigration Health Surcharge — £1,035/year (paid upfront for visa duration)
2026 changes to know
- English language requirement raised from B1 to B2 from January 2026.
- The eligible occupation list was reduced from July 2025. Some medium-skilled roles were removed. Check the current list at gov.uk before applying.
- Social care overseas recruitment ended July 2025. The care sector is now largely closed to international recruitment.
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
Your employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship you reference in your visa application. Without a valid CoS from a licensed sponsor, the application cannot proceed. Your employer's HR or legal team typically handles this.
Path to settlement
- After 5 years on a Skilled Worker Visa: apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- Must not have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period
- After ILR + 1 year: apply for British citizenship
Information correct as of August 2026. Occupation lists, salary thresholds and English requirements are reviewed periodically. Always verify at gov.uk.
