Most Saffa content focuses on Dubai, but plenty of saffas are living and loving it in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and beyond. Each emirate has its own vibe, price point and admin quirks.
Abu Dhabi
The UAE capital. Government jobs, oil sector and healthcare draw a lot of expats. Generally pricier than Dubai in the city centre, but Khalifa City and Al Raha Beach offer good value.
- Tawtheeq is Abu Dhabi's equivalent of Ejari. Register at tamm.abudhabi or through a typing centre.
- ADDC (Abu Dhabi Distribution Company) or AADC handle utilities. Apply at addc.ae or aadc.ae.
- Abu Dhabi has a 5% municipality fee on rent, added to your utility bill.
- Security deposit is typically 5% of annual rent.
- Rental disputes go to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.
Sharjah
Sharjah is the budget-friendly option for people working in Dubai. Rents are significantly lower but the Sharjah-Dubai commute on Sheikh Zayed Road can be brutal during peak hours.
- Sharjah Real Estate Registration Department handles tenancy registration.
- Cheque culture is the same as Dubai.
- No alcohol in Sharjah (it is a dry emirate).
- Good family infrastructure: lots of schools, malls and quiet residential areas.
Ras Al Khaimah
RAK is growing fast. Wynn Al Marjan Island (casino resort) is opening 2027, and rents are still very affordable. Popular with outdoorsy types because of the Hajar Mountains.
- RAK Municipality handles property registration.
- Much lower rents than Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
- Growing expat community but smaller social scene.
- 40-60 minute drive to Dubai for work.
Ajman and Fujairah
The most affordable options in the UAE. Ajman is essentially a Dubai satellite city. Fujairah is on the east coast with access to the Indian Ocean, popular for diving and a slower pace of life.
- Both have their own municipal tenancy registration systems.
- Ajman: 30-40 minutes from Dubai, much cheaper rent.
- Fujairah: stunning scenery, very relaxed, limited local job market.

- Work in Dubai with a budget: Sharjah or Ajman
