Dubai gets all the attention, but the UAE has six other emirates, each with a different vibe, cost of living and lifestyle. Here is an honest breakdown to help you figure out where you actually want to live.

Dubai

The default choice, and for good reason. Best job market, most diverse social scene, best infrastructure. Also the most expensive.

  • Rent typically 20-40% higher than other emirates.
  • Strong finance, tech, media, hospitality and healthcare sectors.
  • World-class transport, entertainment and dining.
  • Popular saffa areas: Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), Al Barsha, Mirdif, Dubai Hills, Palm Jumeirah (if budget allows).

Abu Dhabi

The capital. More conservative in culture than Dubai but still very liveable. Strong for government, oil sector, healthcare and education roles.

  • Good value in Khalifa City, Al Raha Beach and Mohammed Bin Zayed City.
  • Rents 30-40% cheaper than equivalent Dubai areas in some parts.
  • Corniche and Yas Island are excellent for outdoor lifestyle.
  • Less nightlife than Dubai but a growing arts and food scene.

Sharjah

Budget-friendly option for people working in Dubai. Rents are 30-50% lower but the commute on Sheikh Zayed Road during rush hour is brutal.

  • Dry emirate: no alcohol sold or consumed publicly.
  • Very family-friendly with a large expat community.
  • Great for remote workers or people with flexible hours.
  • Significantly lower rents than Dubai.

Ras Al Khaimah

RAK is growing fast. The Wynn Al Marjan Island casino resort opens in 2027 and rents are still very affordable. Popular with outdoorsy types because of the Hajar Mountains.

  • Most affordable rents in the northern emirates.
  • 40-60 minute drive to Dubai.
  • Great for outdoor activities: hiking, climbing, beaches.
  • Growing expat community but smaller social scene than Dubai.

Ajman

Essentially a Dubai satellite city. Shortest drive to Dubai of the northern emirates. Very affordable, large expat community, quiet locally but close enough to Dubai for evenings out.

Fujairah

East coast. Indian Ocean. Mountains. A completely different vibe to the rest of the UAE.

  • Best diving and snorkelling in the UAE.
  • Very affordable rent.
  • Limited local job market: mostly remote workers or oil and gas sector.
  • Slower pace of life.

Quick decision guide

  • Best job market — Dubai
  • Government or healthcare sector — Abu Dhabi
  • Tightest budget but close to Dubai — Sharjah or Ajman
  • Outdoor lifestyle, growing city — Ras Al Khaimah
  • Remote worker, sea view, slower pace — Fujairah
