South Africa is on the DVLA's designated countries list, which means you can exchange your SA driving licence for a UK one without taking a theory or practical test. But there are specific requirements.
The good news: No driving test. No theory test. Exchange with paperwork only. You have 12 months from becoming a UK resident to drive on your SA licence. After that, you must hold a UK licence.
Important: which SA licence is accepted?
- Only the credit card format SA driving licence is accepted by the DVLA
- The old green booklet format (book of life) is NOT accepted for exchange. If you have this, you must sit the full UK theory and practical tests.
What you need
- Original SA driving licence (credit card format) — DVLA will keep it permanently
- Confirmation letter from the SA Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) verifying your licence is genuine
- Completed D1 application form (from any Post Office)
- UK proof of address (utility bill, bank statement, council tax bill)
- Passport
- Passport-size photo
- £43 fee (cheque or postal order payable to DVLA)
Getting the RTMC confirmation letter
- Email the Road Traffic Management Corporation via rtmc.co.za to request a licence verification letter
- Allow 2-4 weeks for the letter to be issued
- This letter is specific to SA-to-UK exchanges and not widely known
The process
- Get D1 form from a Post Office or download from gov.uk
- Get RTMC verification letter from South Africa — allow 2-4 weeks
- Send everything by recorded post to DVLA Swansea — DVLA keeps your SA licence permanently
- Receive UK licence — allow 2-4 weeks. You can drive during processing on your valid SA licence.
After conversion
- UK licence valid until age 70, then renewable every 3 years
- Your SA licence is surrendered permanently to DVLA. If you may ever return to drive in SA, get a replacement SA licence before you leave.
- UK licence doubles as valid photo ID
