Good news first: South Africa is on the UAE's approved list for direct driving licence conversion. No lessons, no test, no drama. You hand in your SA licence and get a UAE one. Here is the exact process.
What makes SA special here
The UAE only allows direct conversion from approved countries. South Africa is on the list alongside the UK, Australia, USA and Germany. Many nationalities (India, Pakistan, Egypt) cannot convert and must go through full driving lessons. Saffas skip all of that.
What you need before you start
- Valid UAE residency visa
- Valid Emirates ID
- Original South African driving licence (the credit card sized one)
- Passport
The process
- Eye test at an RTA-approved clinic — Al Jaber Optical, Yateem Optician or Grand Optics. Cost: AED 100-150. Results are submitted electronically to the RTA system.
- Book your appointment online — Dubai: RTA Dubai app or rta.ae. Abu Dhabi: tamm.abudhabi. Other emirates: contact the local traffic department.
- Visit the RTA customer happiness centre — Bring your reference number, eye test result, original SA licence, Emirates ID and passport.
- Pay fees and submit documents.
- Receive your UAE driving licence — Usually issued same day or within 24 hours.
What it costs
- File opening — AED 200
- Licence issuance — AED 600
- Knowledge and innovation fee — AED 20
- Eye test — AED 100-150
- Total — approximately AED 920-970
After conversion
- Your UAE driving licence is valid for 10 years.
- You can legally drive in any of the seven emirates.
- You can also drive in other GCC countries with your UAE licence.
- Salik (Dubai toll road): register your vehicle at salik.gov.ae to top up automatically.
- Fines are linked to your licence plate, not your person. Check outstanding fines at rta.ae before buying a second-hand car.
Old green barcoded SA licence?
If you have the old green barcoded paper licence, you may need to convert it to the credit card format at a DLTC in SA before the RTA will accept it. The card format is the one the RTA works with.
