Your SA credit history does not exist in the UK. You arrive as what lenders call a thin file — not a bad risk, just unknown. Building credit quickly is one of the most important financial moves of your first year.
Why credit matters in the UK
- Renting privately — landlords and letting agents credit-check all applicants
- Mobile phone contracts — networks check credit before offering 24-month plans
- Car finance — dealerships credit-check before approving finance
- Mortgages — credit history is central to mortgage approval
The three credit reference agencies
- Experian — experian.co.uk. Most widely used by lenders.
- Equifax — equifax.co.uk. Free report available.
- TransUnion — via ClearScore (free, excellent). clearscore.com.
How to build credit: the fastest route
Do all of these in Month 1.
- Open a UK bank account — Monzo or Starling accept new arrivals with just a passport. A current account with regular activity is the foundation of your credit file.
- Register on the electoral roll — gov.uk/register-to-vote. The single biggest credit score boost available. Even if you cannot vote in general elections.
- Get a credit builder card — Aqua, Marbles, Vanquis or Capital One. Spend £20-£50/month. Pay the FULL balance every month. Never miss a payment.
- Set up direct debits for all bills — Council tax, energy, broadband. Regular direct debits paid on time build your payment history.
- Use a rent reporting service — CreditLadder or Canopy report your rent payments to credit agencies. Rent is your biggest payment — it should count.
Timeline
- Month 1 — Bank account, electoral roll, credit builder card
- Months 2-6 — Use credit card monthly, pay in full, pay all bills on time
- Month 6 — Credit score starts to become meaningful
- Month 9-12 — Better credit cards and phone contracts become accessible
- Year 2+ — Mortgage applications become realistic
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying for multiple credit products at once. Every application leaves a hard search. Space applications at least 3 months apart.
- Missing a single payment. One missed payment can stay on your file for 6 years.
- Closing your oldest credit account. The age of your oldest account matters. Keep it open.
